Chapter 5

Frustration and disappointment welled up in Warrian’s chest as he let Rita take his hand and pull him out of the Mesmer chamber. This was all wrong. He’d been so sure she would mate with him, so sure she’d wanted this as much as he did, and then she’d pulled back.

There was something else going on. He was sure of it. She was hiding something. He just couldn’t figure out what. And until he did, he needed to be cautious.

Despite his mistrust, her presence was proof enough of her claim that things had changed drastically while he’d slept. There had been no humans anywhere nearby who had looked or dressed like her when he’d entered the Mesmer.

He needed to get his bearings before he did anything reckless. He couldn’t keep his clan safe if he couldn’t even keep himself safe. Much as he wanted to fly straight to his lair and hunt for his clan, Rita was right. Caution was warranted.

He ground his teeth together. Dragon leaders weren’t cautious. They were bold and strong and certain.

None of which he could be now.

“Come on, my car is just over there,” Rita urged, tugging on his hand.

Warrian let her pull him along, still mulling over everything she’d said in his mind, trying to guess what her objective could possibly be.

He was so engrossed in his thoughts he was caught completely off guard when a dragon screech rang out above his head. He twisted, staring up the cliffs, his heart pounding in his chest as the silver lightning dragon swooped down directly towards him.

Trima clan.

This was the trap. And he’d been so distracted by her presence that he’d fallen for it without even a second thought. Had that been her intention?

Rita’s shout pushed the thought out of his mind. “Quick, get to the car.” She ran towards a bright yellow metal blob in the middle of the sand, as though it would somehow save them.

Which it could. Warrian’s heart lifted a little. If they could just get inside, the metal would funnel away the Trima dragon’s lightning.

It was only once he was inside with Rita that he realised the enormity of his mistake. As the first blast of Trima lightning hit the outside of the ‘car’, dissipating away from them, he realised he was trapped.

Apparently Trima clan no longer wished to kill him, just to capture him. That was new, and very concerning.

But Rita wasn’t just turning to him to gloat. She fiddled with something in front of her, muttering under her breath, “Come on, come on.”

Warrian could smell her fear, and surprisingly it reassured him slightly. It indicated that it was possible she hadn’t been involved in this. Maybe she’d been tricked too. He wanted to believe she had because that would mean he hadn’t been as stupid as it seemed.

Another blast of lightning hit the car. Rita squealed and pulled her arms and legs in towards her as it crackled over the outside of the metal. But as soon as the lightning faded away, she started fiddling again.
